YES – this is a podcast about infant adoption – so today’s topic may sound a bit off from the norm – but I really don’t think so.
For one – I think any parent or parent-to-be needs to understand how to deal with adoption conversation – especially when it comes to school, or pre-school or even with day care.
Not all teachers or day care providers are educated about adoption. So, as parents and parents-to-be, we need to take the lead to help them, which will help our children.
To quote adoptionsupport.org:
“You’d be amazed at the questions adopted children are asked about being adopted. For some children, it begins as early as age 3: Why don’t you look like your mom? For others, it begins at school: What happened to your real mother? and Why did she give you away? Friends, classmates – even well-meaning grown-ups – make comments or ask questions that can be uncomfortable for adopted children.”
So – today we are going to cover topics like how to handle adoption questions from kids and other parents, how to deal with school projects like a family tree, how to talk to your children when other kids ask about being adopted, and much more.
Our special guest is Angela Magnuson, who is the lead post-adoption consultant for Bethany Christian Services’ Post Adoption Contact Center, a national resource for all members of the adoption triad.
As a licensed professional counselor, she has completed Rutgers University’s Adoption Certificate program and has been trained in Trust-Based Relational Intervention® through The Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development.
Angela is awesome. I had fun talking with her and she clearly has a heart that wants to help people just like you and me. I know you will learn a lot from her (as I did).
She shares a bunch of tips and stories. I am sure that you will be surprised by how much this topic applies to everyone on the infant adoption journey.
You can connect with Angela at 1-866-309-7328 between 8am and 5pm Eastern. You can email her at BCSpostadopt@bethany.org.
