After adopting three times, my wife and I realize more than ever the importance of talking to our kids about their adoption story. How they came into our family is their story. We love to start talking about it as early as we can so they grow up always knowing how God brought us together.
We’ve also realized that books about adoption for kids are a great conversation starter for talking about their story. Over the years, we’ve discovered many children’s books about adoption. There are a lot of good ones out there. These are the ones we’ve chosen to share with you.
We hope you get these books and read them to your little one often.
- ABC, Adoption & ME by Gayle Swift. Our kids have loved this book for several years now. It is a fun read because is uses every letter in the alphabet to talk about lots of adoption topics. Click here to read my review of the book.
- Tell Me Again About The Night I Was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis. Our kids love this book. It is a great story about adoption and the importance of a loving family.
- I Wished for You: An Adoption Story by Marianne Richmond. This awesome book received the Mom’s Choice Award. It follows the conversation between a little bear named Barley and his Mama as they talk about how they became a family. Barley Bear asks his mom questions that many kids have about adoption. PLUS – you can create your own personal version of this book, including adding your child’s name on the cover.
- My Adoption StoryBook by Keith Miller. This book is very unique because you can create a custom, personalized book that tells the story of your child’s adoption and how your family came together. Keith is an dad through adoption. I was able to interview him on the Infant Adoption Guide Podcast – episode 21 where he shares how he came up with the idea for this book. It has beautifully illustrated pages and an engaging story – along with your details and photos – which brings your book to life, making a precious reading experience with your child. It’s a treasured keepsake you’ll cherish.
- Yes, I’m Adopted! by Sharlie Zinniger. This brightly colored book illustrates how adoption is brought about by love. It is written from a kid’s point of view, the rhyming verse takes you through an adoption journey from start to finish. There you go.
